Castor Bay to Dungannon Strategic Trunk Main

In order to meet increasing demand and provide operational flexibility, Northern Ireland Water (NIW) commissioned a new 51km trunk main on a design and build basis to run from Castor Bay to Dungannon.

The successful DAWSON-WAM design required the installation of 28km of polyethylene pipes of varying diameters from 400mm to 710mm together with 23km of 450mm ductile iron pipe.

Key features of the project included:

  • The construction of a new 6.4 megalitre service reservoir and chlorination process and a 7.2 megalitre per day Water Pumping Station within an existing Northern Ireland Water works at Carland, County Tyrone.

  • New Water Pumping Station at Moy, County Tyrone capable of delivering a combined total of 30 megalitres per day.

  • Various cross connections with existing Northern Ireland Water infrastructure requiring live connections.

  • Sectional completions to meet the client’s requirements.

  • The Engineering highlight of the project was a twin 710mm diameter PE 1000 linear metre crossing of two rivers, a listed canal and the main Belfast to Dublin railway line. This was successfully installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) in a single shot, under all of the features in soft clays overlaid by 5-6m of peat.
